The assault took place in Bridgeport around 9:15 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 11, in the 800 block of Fairfield Ave., said Scott Appleby, director of Emergency Management for Bridgeport.
When officers arrived, they found the victim, 49-year-old Daniel Engeldrum, suffering from a head injury. Endgeldrum, who was homeless, was taken to Saint Vincent’s Hospital, where he died from his injuries two days later, on Friday, Jan. 13, Appleby said.
An autopsy confirmed his death was due to the assault and ruled a homicide, police said.
Detective Brian Coyne of the Homicide Unit was assigned the case and together with other detectives developed a Bridgeport man, Elijah Humphrey, age 32, as a suspect, Appleby said.
Humphrey was questioned and allegedly confessed to the beating death during an interview, he added.
Humphrey was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 17, and charged with manslaughter and intimidation due to bias.
He is being held on a $1 million bond and will be arraigned on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
"Great work by Detective Coyne and all those that assisted in this case," Appleby said.
